Type free website audit Kenya into Google and you will get no shortage of options promising to check your site for nothing. Try a few, though, and a pattern shows up fast. Some genuinely scan your website and hand you a score before you have given them anything. Others ask for your name, email, and phone number first, and the audit turns out to be a multi-step form followed by a call from a salesperson. Both are allowed to call themselves free. Only one of them is actually a tool.
Here is how to tell which one you are looking at before you spend ten minutes filling in a form for nothing.
Type One: The Real Automated Scan
You paste in a URL. Within a minute or two, without giving up your name or phone number, you get back an actual score built from real data, usually covering speed, mobile performance, basic SEO signals, and technical health. No human has looked at your site yet. A machine has, using the same signals search engines use to rank you. This is the genuine article, and it is rarer than the search results suggest.
Type Two: The Checklist Dressed Up As a Tool
These are usually a long list of questions you tick off yourself. Does your site have an SSL certificate, yes or no. Is your title tag under 60 characters, yes or no. They can be genuinely useful as a learning exercise, especially if you know nothing about any of this, but they rely entirely on you correctly judging your own website, which is exactly the skill most business owners do not have, and the reason they wanted an audit in the first place.
Type Three: The Quiz That Is Actually a Sales Funnel
This is the one to watch for. It presents itself as an audit, sometimes even with a progress bar and a calculating your score animation, but the questions are about your business rather than your website: your industry, your monthly budget, how many staff you have, whether you are the decision maker. By the time you reach the result, what you actually get is a vague sentence about significant room for improvement and a form asking where to send your full report. The report arrives attached to a sales call booking link. That is not an audit. That is a lead form wearing an audit's clothes, and there is nothing wrong with lead generation as a business model, it is just worth knowing which one you signed up for.
How to Tell the Difference in Ten Seconds
Look for a plain URL box on the page itself. If you can paste your website address in and get a number back without typing your name first, you have found a real tool. If the first thing asked of you is your email, phone number, or business details before any result appears, you are in a sales funnel, whatever the page happens to call itself.
What a Genuine Scan Actually Checks
A proper automated audit, ours included, pulls real technical data rather than opinions. That means checking your speed, how quickly your pages load, particularly on mobile connections, since that is how most Kenyan visitors will find you. It checks your search visibility, whether Google can actually read and index your pages properly. It checks usability, whether your site works for everyone, including basics like readable contrast and properly labelled forms. And it checks your website health, the technical and security issues sitting quietly in the background, the kind that do not show up until they cause a real problem.
If you want the deeper explanation of what each of those actually means for your score, we walk through it properly in how to read your website audit score and what to fix first.
Why So Many Free Tools Are Actually Forms
None of this is malicious. Building a real automated scanner, one that actually talks to your site, measures it, and scores it honestly, takes real engineering work. A lead-capture quiz takes an afternoon. For a lot of agencies, the quiz version is simply cheaper to build and does the one thing they actually need it to do: get your phone number. There is a place for that model. It is just not the same product as a tool that scans your site, and you deserve to know which one you are getting before you hand over your details.
Where We Land
Our own free website audit tool is the first kind: a real scan, no signup, results in under two minutes, built on the same engine, Google's own PageSpeed data, that determines a chunk of your search ranking anyway. If it turns up something that needs a closer, human look, that is what our paid audit service is for, and you will know that going in rather than discovering it three form fields later.
