Somewhere right now, a freelancer is opening a project built entirely by an AI tool such as Bolt.new, Lovable, or ChatGPT, trying to work out why the login screen sometimes lets in the wrong person. That is not a hypothetical. It is a real, paid job that a growing number of people now do full time, and most business owners who had an app built this way have no idea the job exists until they need it themselves.
A job Forbes did not expect to be writing about
In September 2025, Forbes published a piece treating what it called a vibe coding cleanup specialist, someone who fixes apps that AI tools built, as a genuine, emerging job title. The piece was notably careful rather than breathless about it, questioning whether the role would stay stable given how quickly the AI tools themselves keep improving. That caution is worth taking seriously. But the fact that a mainstream business publication was covering this as a real occupation at all, rather than an in-joke among developers, is itself the story.
Eight months later, TechCrunch went further. A piece published in May 2026 quoted a programmer named James Shore making a blunt point: if AI lets you write code twice as fast, you had better have cut what it costs you to maintain that code in half too, or you have not saved any time at all, you have just borrowed it, with interest due later. The article cited CodeRabbit, a company that reviews code for a living, finding that AI-generated code created 1.7 times more problems than human-written code, in a direct, real-world comparison across actual projects. It also quoted Aiswarya Sankar, founder of a company called Entelligence AI, stating that businesses are now spending 44 percent of their AI budget fixing bugs that their own AI created in the first place. A separate report from Singapore Management University, also from 2026, warned that the long-term cost of keeping AI-generated code running is a real, measurable problem, not a theoretical one.
What this actually adds up to
None of these sources say, in so many words, that an industry has formed around fixing this problem. That framing is mine, based on putting the evidence together, and it is worth being upfront about that rather than borrowing authority the sources themselves did not claim. What the evidence does show clearly is that real businesses now exist whose entire purpose is fixing apps that AI tools built. A software outsourcing firm called Redwerk has built a dedicated service and a running blog around exactly this work. Freelance marketplaces list individual workers offering to fix AI-built apps by tool name, Bolt, Lovable, Replit, Cursor. At least one business built its whole operation around nothing else. None of that happened by accident. Somebody is paying for it, repeatedly, or these businesses would have closed already.
Put the mainstream reporting next to that market evidence and a fairly plain picture forms. AI coding tools are genuinely good at producing something that looks finished, fast. What they are less reliably good at is producing something that keeps working once real customers, real data, and real edge cases show up. The gap between those two things is where this new line of work lives, which is either a sign of how convincing AI-built demos have become, or a sign of how little a convincing demo actually proves. Probably both.
Why this should matter to you specifically
If you used an AI tool to build a website, an internal tool, or something customer-facing, none of this is meant to scare you away from doing that again. Plenty of AI-built apps work fine for exactly what they were built to do. The point is narrower: if your app starts behaving strangely once real customers are using it, you are not imagining a personal failure, and you are not the only person this has happened to. There is now a whole category of skilled people whose job is specifically to walk into someone else's AI-built mess and make sense of it.
That also changes your position when you go looking for help. A couple of years ago, explaining "an AI built this and now something is wrong with it" to a developer might have gotten you a confused look. Today it is more likely to get you someone who has already fixed a dozen apps in exactly that condition.
What to actually do with this
The honest, unglamorous advice is to treat an AI-built app the way you would treat any other piece of business equipment you did not build yourself: expect it to need occasional professional attention, plan for that possibility from the start, and do not wait until it is actively costing you customers to find out who can help. When it does turn out to be more than a quick fix, that is what a proper code cleanup is for: an honest look at what is actually broken and a quote based on the real size of the problem, not a guess. That is a decision for another day, though. Right now, the useful thing to take away is simply that this is a real, growing line of work, not a niche curiosity, and knowing it exists puts you ahead of most people who only find out the hard way.
